The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has declared Governor Ahmadu Fintiri as the winner of the supplementary election in Adamawa State.

Fintiri was announced as the winner of the election exactly one month after the March 18 governorship and house of assembly elections.

The candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) retained his seat after polling 430,861 votes to defeat his main rival, Aisha Dahiru aka Binani of the All Progressives Congress who polled 398,788.

Fintiri’s victory was preceded by a series of political intrigues and drama that almost turned the tide in favour of Binani, who was illegally announced as the winner of the election while collation was still ongoing.

Recall that supplementary election was conducted in Adamawa state on Saturday, April 15, 2023, between Fintiri and Binani after the the March 18 governorship was declared inconclusive.

But while the collation of the results was underway, Hudu Yunusa Ari, the state Resident Electoral Commissioner (REC) illegally declared Binani as the winner of the election.

The controversial declaration prompted INEC to suspend Yunusa and also annulled his declaration.

On Tuesday, April 18, 2023, after its meeting involving all national commissioners in Abuja, the electoral umpire in a statement asked the police to investigate and prosecute Yunusa.
