The Western Nigeria Security Network (WNSN) (Amotekun Corps) in Ondo State, on Wednesday, said that the corps has prosecuted no fewer than 1500 suspects since its establishment in 2020.

Adetunji Adeleye, the Ondo State Commander of the corps, said this in Akure at an interactive programme organised by the Correspondents Chapel of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Ondo State Council, tagged The Platform .

Adeleye said that 7000 suspects were arrested by personnel of the corps in different parts of the state while 1500 were prosecuted after thorough investigations.

He said that the security outfit secured convictions of some of those prosecuted, adding that infractions by four of its personnel were also sanctioned with dismissal while others punished as provided by law.

Adeleye, who is also the Special Adviser to the Ondo State Governor on Security Matters, said that the vision of the governors of the states in the South- West region had been realised with the tremendous success recorded in combating crime.

He said that with the corps unconventional method of operations and cooperation of other security agencies, especially the Department of Security Services (DSS), the state was now one of the safest in the country.

Adeleye, also the chairman of the Council of Amotekun Commanders in South-West, said the significant number of arrests made by the corps had reduced the farmers/herders clash by over 95 per cent in the last two years.

According to him, Gov. Oluwarotimi Akeredolu approved the building of two additional courts to assist the judiciary in speedy hearing of criminal matters.

“In response to the pockets of violence in border areas presently, the government has directed offices and control points in Imoru, Ijagba axis to take care of kidnapping and violence around Ose Local Government, some of which we’ve implemented.

“The same directive for Jugbere, which is to take care of Akure North, and we are proposing three other strategic ones, such that by the year’s end, all our porous border villages and towns will be adequately covered.

“Within two weeks of our inception, we received over 5,000 petitions of herders/farmers clashes. It was becoming impossible for farmers to go to their farms completely for fear of herders molesting, kidnapping, maiming or killing them.

“The implementation of the anti-open grazing law in the state was also an added advantage for us because it enhances our position in enforcement and the terms of the law was clear,” he said.

The commander further said that the corps had remained non partisan in politics since its creation.

He said that the command in Ondo state had commenced 24-hour patrol across the 18 local government areas of the state.

Adeleye said that the major challenge confronting the agency was inadequate weapons to match what criminals confront its operatives with.

“Some of the challenges we face as result of inadequate equipment has been loss of precious lives of some of our men, but we remain determined,” he said.

Corruption crackdown: 11 LASTMA officers face disciplinary panel as agency vows to weed out bad elements

In a determined effort to root out corruption within its ranks, the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) has confirmed the arraignment of 11 officers before a disciplinary panel. The officers face various charges related to corrupt practices, with one officer being found not guilty out of the 12 originally arraigned.

The acting General Manager of LASTMA, Mr Olalekan Bakare, affirmed the disciplinary proceedings in a statement released on Friday, providing insights into the agency’s commitment to upholding its rules and regulations as guided by the Lagos State Civil Service Rules.

Bakare, who also served on the disciplinary panel, disclosed that the cases were adjudicated by a panel, statutorily constituted with the presence of three permanent secretaries. The outcome saw 11 officers found guilty of corrupt practices, while one officer was exonerated.

The disciplinary panel has forwarded its recommendations to the State Civil Service Commission for ratification in accordance with public service rules. The recommended punishments range from dismissal, reduction in rank, to immediate termination of appointment from the state public service.

Addressing the public, Bakare issued a stern warning to corrupt officers within the agency, emphasizing that stiff and severe punishments would continue to be meted out to those tarnishing LASTMA’s image. He urged residents, especially the motoring public, to support the ongoing restructuring by promptly reporting errant officers through the agency’s complaints hotlines, providing proof of evidence.

Bakare emphasized, “All officers are, hereby, warned to always carry out their duties without fear or favour, but in accordance with the stipulated laws guiding the authority. Any operative caught in the process of bringing the agency or the state government into disrepute shall equally face the consequences.”

While commending LASTMA officials for their dedication, dutifulness, diligence, and professionalism, Bakare issued a warning to the motoring public against inducing traffic personnel with bribes. He highlighted that the law frowns upon both the giver and the receiver in such transactions and urged compliance to avoid prosecution.

The move to discipline corrupt officers aligns with LASTMA’s commitment to maintaining transparency, efficiency, and public trust. The agency’s resolve to root out corruption reflects broader efforts within Nigeria to instill accountability and uphold ethical standards in public service. For complaints and inquiries via its social media handles, the following social media handles were given for motorists to reach out to LASTMA management. including Instagram – ekolastma; Twitter ‘X’ – @followlastma; Facebook – ekolastma and Youtube – LastmaTV.
