Atiku Abubakar, the presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in the 2023 general elections, has expressed his determination to persist in his pursuit for justice after losing his attempt to overturn the victory of President Bola Tinubu at the Presidential Election Petition Court (PEPC).
At a press conference organized by the PDP on Thursday, September 7, 2023, Atiku affirmed that while he may have suffered a setback at the PEPT, “the war is well ahead of us.”
Atiku had contested the President’s election on various grounds, including claims that President Tinubu was not duly qualified to participate in the poll.
However, the tribunal, led by Justice Haruna Tsammani, unanimously dismissed Atiku’s petition and upheld President Tinubu’s victory in the fiercely contested February 25 election.
Addressing the press at the PDP’s Headquarters in Abuja, Atiku stated, “I am here today to officially respond to the judgment delivered by the Presidential Election Petition Court regarding the 2023 presidential election, as you are aware, I approached the court following INEC’s declaration that the APC and its candidate are the winners of the February 25 Presidential Election.”
He emphasized his belief in the judicial system as the protector of justice and democracy, recounting his political journey and the significant role of the judiciary in upholding justice.
“At the outset of this legal battle when I instructed my lawyers to file a petition challenging the outcome of the presidential election, my ultimate goal was to ensure that democracy is further strengthened through the principles and processes of fair hearing,” the former Vice President remarked.
Expressing his concern over the management of the last presidential election by INEC, Atiku contended that the court’s judgment had failed to restore confidence in the dream of transparent elections free from manipulation.
“Despite my respect for the court, I refuse to accept the judgment because I believe it lacks substantial justice,” Atiku asserted. Nevertheless, he emphasized his enduring faith in the judiciary as the final recourse for the masses.
In conclusion, Atiku declared his intention to exercise his constitutionally guaranteed right to appeal to the higher court, which in this case is the Supreme Court. He reaffirmed his commitment to pursuing an electoral process in Nigeria free from irregularities and one that genuinely reflects the voters’ wishes.
Atiku urged his supporters to remain resolute, drawing inspiration from the teachings of his late leader and mentor, Shehu Yar’Adua, who emphasized that losing a battle is less significant than losing the war.
In his closing remarks, Atiku expressed gratitude to the press for their attention and support in his quest for justice.
