NLC , TUC launch nationwide strike at midnight in protest of assault on leaders and unresolved Labour issues

In a decisive move, the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and the Trade Union Congress of Nigeria (TUC) have officially initiated a nationwide strike, commencing from midnight today. This action serves as a collective response to the assault on NLC President, Ajaero, and other leaders in Owerri, Imo State, on November 1, coupled with the lingering labor concerns within Imo State.

The decision to embark on the nationwide strike was formalized on November 7, with a looming deadline of Tuesday, November 14, if their demands remained unaddressed. The catalyst for this widespread industrial action traces back to the egregious attack on Ajaero and other labor leaders during a scheduled protest at the NLC State secretariat.

During the November 1 incident, suspected state agents and security operatives descended on Ajaero and fellow leaders, damaging vehicles, causing injuries, and forcibly taking personal belongings, including handsets, money, and ATM cards. The assault transpired as the leaders gathered to address issues such as unpaid salaries, allowances, pensions, gratuities, and non-compliance with the National Minimum Wage Act.

The brutalization of Ajaero and his counterparts has sparked outrage and condemnation across the country and internationally. As the nationwide strike takes effect, the NLC and TUC stand united in their quest for justice, resolution of labor grievances, and the assurance of a safer environment for workers and leaders alike. Further details on this developing situation are anticipated.
