State governors convene for crucial NEC summit in Abuja

In a power-packed gathering, state governors and key officials assemble at the presidential villa in Abuja for the National Economic Council (NEC) meeting, led by Vice President Kashim Shettima. The session, a monthly staple, features discussions on pressing issues like ecological concerns, security challenges, and pivotal economic resolutions.

Established by the Nigerian Constitution, the NEC, guided by Section 153(1) and Paragraphs 18 & 19 of Part I of the Third Schedule, holds the mandate to “advise the President concerning the economic affairs of the Federation.” This includes coordinating economic planning efforts across various government levels.

Top on today’s agenda are the critical topics of ecological and security challenges in the country, along with resolutions on economic matters. The NEC employs ad hoc committees to delve into specific tasks, dissolving them once objectives are met.

In June, President Bola Tinubu, during the council’s inauguration, urged its members to actively support his administration’s mission to transform the country’s economic landscape. Emphasising a commitment to delivering on promises made to Nigerians, Tinubu left no room for failure in the monumental task of growing the nation’s economy.

Governors in attendance include representatives from Kaduna, Bauchi, Ogun, Bayelsa, Kwara, Kogi, Jigawa, alongside some deputy governors, underscoring the broad representation at this crucial NEC summit.
