Lagos governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, on Thursday, announced the indefinite closure of the Dosumu market in the Idumota area of Lagos.

On Tuesday, the fire outbreak engulfed 15 buildings, of which six collapsed.

Mr Sanwo-Olu, during an on-the-spot assessment stated that the closure would provide the government time to come up with solutions.

“This is an incident too often, condemnable and unacceptable because government resources are not meant to be wasted like this.”

“We are going to be coming hard and ensuring that the Physical planning authority, the spaces that we have here, we will comply with them no matter who it is. We will do it and stand by our officers that are out there to do their jobs.”

He said that “some level of support” will be rendered to those affected by the fire outbreak.

Mr Sanwo-Olu said an integrity test on standing structures is now mandatory, and “Dosunmu Market will remain closed until we can ensure the safety of all structures and compliance with regulations.

“Unapproved buildings will be demolished. Our commitment to safety and order in our markets is unwavering.”
