The deposed Emir of Kano, Aminu Bayero has returned to the ancient city despite his deposition by the state government on Thursday.

Bayero made his way back into the ancient city in the early hours of Saturday and was welcomed by a large crowd of supporters.

The aircraft carrying the former Emir touched down at the Aminu Kano Airport at about 4:30am. He was immediately surrounded by supporters chanting praises to Allah.

Although, Bayero, dressed in full royal attire, did not address the supporters, he made his way into the Gidan Nasarawa Palace accompanied by the crowd.

Emir Sanusi III, who was installed as the 16th Emir by Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf, has since Friday occupied the Gidan Rumfa Palace and it’s not clear what will happen next in the unfolding drama in Kano.

The two palaces are under heavy security cover.

The  Kano State Government is accusing the immediate past governor of the state Umar Ganduje of attempts to create confusion in the city by bringing the deposed Emir back to the palace.

The Deputy Governor of the state,  Aminu Abdulsalam, who spoke with journalists, accused Ganduje of conniving with the Office of the National Security Adviser to smuggle Bayero into the palace.

He said the state government and the people will resist any such attempt by keeping vigil at the palace.

There has not been any official response from the former governor or the Office of the NSA as at the time of this report.
