Labour declares indefinte strike from midnight sunday
Organised Labour in Nigeria has kept to its promise made on May 1 to start a strike after May 31, 2024, should the government refuse to announce an agreed new national minimum wage.
The President of the Trade Union Congress, Festus Osifor while addressing journalists in Abuja on Friday said workers will observe a strike from midnight of Sunday, June 2, 2024.
His counterpart from the Nigeria Labour Congres, Joe Ajaero, who also spoke during the news congerence President added that the strike will go on even if the government invites them to resume talks until an “agreeable” minimum wage is arrived at.
The federal government has proposed a N60,000 minimum wage but the organised labour has said it wants N494, 000 for the least paid worker in the country.
As at the time of this report, neither the organised private sector nor the federal government has reacted to the indefinite strike announced by labour.
The Organised Labour, which is made up of the Nigeria Labour Congress, NLC, and the Trade Union Congress, TUC, also wants the federal government to immediately reverse the hike in electricity tariff recently announced.
