VAR Decisions To Be Explained On-Screen At Euro 2024 Stadia–UEFA

Fans at the Euro 2024 tournament will be given more detailed information on video assisted refereeing decisions than before, organisers UEFA said Wednesday.

The head of UEFA’s refereeing committee Roberto Rosetti said screens at different Stadia across Germany will provide technical explanations of VAR calls in order to improve spectator understanding.

For instance, if a handball has been committed, the screen will explain why the decision has been made if the player’s arm has been judged to be in an unnatural position.

Rosetti also explained that, as part of new guidance, referees will also be encouraged to better explain VAR decisions made to captains on the field, and that he wants a line of dialogue to exist between officials and captains.

Other outfield players will not be afforded the same privilege and Rosetti made it clear that harassment of referees by players, or disrespectful behaviour, would be dealt with strictly.

One of various criticisms of the VAR technology since its widespread introduction has been the difficulty fans have in understanding why certain decisions are made.

The Euro 2024 tournament will start on Friday and ends July 14.
