Koeman Accuses VAR Of Killing Football After Netherlands Loss To England

Netherlands Coach Ronald Koeman has criticised the use of video assistant referees VAR for killing football after England were awarded a controversial penalty in Tuesday’s tense Euro 2024 semi-final.

Netherlands took an early lead through Xavi Simons’ powerful strike but England were handed a lifeline when Harry Kane was brought down by Denzel Dumfries after the England captain had already shot the ball over the bar.

No penalty was initially awarded but referee Felix Zwayer later pointed to the spot after he was advised to go to the monitor by VAR.

Kane equalized with the spot-kick and substitute Ollie Watkins scored the 90th-minute winner to send England to Sunday’s final, where they will play Spain.

Netherlands and Liverpool captain Virgil van Dijk also felt the penalty decision was wrong and it affected the game.
