Boat with 300 passengers capsizes in Niger

Not less than 150 passengers have been rescued while many others are missing following a boat mishap that occurred in Mokwa Local Government Area of Niger State.

The boat was carrying about 300 passengers mostly women and children travelling for Maulid (commemoration of the birth of the Holy Prophet)celebration at Gbajibo, Mokwa LGA, when the accident occurred.

The spokesperson of the Niger State Emergency Management Agency, Hussaini Ibrahim, confirmed the development. He said the incident happened across the River Niger, upstream of Jebba Dam while the boat was sailing from Mundi community.

He said the agency’s search and rescue operation is being carried out in collaboration with the state’s Ministry of Transport, Mokwa Local Government Emergency Committee,  local divers and other community volunteers.
