The national Drugs and Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) has “deleted” the requirement for married women to obtain their husband’s approval for visa clearance.

The anti-narcotics agency’s review comes after many criticised the requirements as outdated and discriminatory.

NDLEA visa clearance procedures require, “married women should bring a letter of approval to travel from their husband, attached with his passport photograph.”

Femi Babafemi, the agency’s spokesperson in a response shared via their X page on Thursday said the section was included “following some ugly developments in some source countries.”

Speaking further, he said the entire procedure for visa clearance issued by the agency as required by some countries is undergoing a review.

Mr Babafemi added that “requirement for a married woman to present a letter of approval from her husband to travel is one of the items that the Agency has since jettisoned as a non-mandatory item on the list.

“Members of the public are assured that the item has been deleted from the list of requirements in the ongoing review exercise, which will be made public in the coming days.”
