Tribunal upholds Tambuwal's victory in Sokoto South senatorial district

The Sokoto State Election Petition Tribunal has ruled in favor of Aminu Tambuwal, the candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), upholding his victory as the duly elected Senator for Sokoto South Senatorial District.

The decision came after a petition filed by Abdullahi Danbaba of the All Progressives Congress (APC) challenging Tambuwal’s win.

Danbaba’s petition alleged that the election did not comply substantially with the provisions of the Electoral Act and requested the Tribunal to declare the election inconclusive.

He also urged the Tribunal to order a re-election in 28 polling units where he claimed the election did not take place during both the substantive and supplementary polls held in February and April.

The Tribunal dismissed Danbaba’s petition, stating that it lacked merit and the evidence presented was not reliable. The ruling affirmed Tambuwal’s victory, who secured a total of 100,860 votes during the election.

Tambuwal’s victory was particularly significant given his status as a two-term former governor of Sokoto State. He triumphed over his closest rival, Danbaba, by a margin of 4,976 votes. Danbaba had garnered 95,884 votes in the election.

Following the dismissal of the petition, the Tribunal awarded the cost of ₦200,000 each to the first and second respondents, the PDP and Tambuwal, respectively.
