Labour Unions warned to respect court order amidst strike threats

In a stern reminder, authorities have called on the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and Trade Union Congress (TUC) to respect an existing court order that prohibits them and their affiliates from initiating a planned strike.

The interim court order, issued on November 10 by Justice B. B. Kanyip, the President of the National Industrial Court of Nigeria, explicitly instructs the unions to refrain from embarking on any industrial action.

Having been duly served the court order, the unions are expected to comply with the directive and acknowledge the authority of the court, which is actively handling the case.

Officials emphasized that any actions taken by the unions in defiance of the court order would amount to contempt of court, stressing the importance of upholding the rule of law.

Through this medium, a plea has been made to the unions to exhibit respect for the court order and embrace the principles of the rule of law, discouraging any inclination towards self-help measures.

The communication also sought to reassure workers, urging them to report for their duties without fear. It emphasized that the safety of the workers is guaranteed and will be protected within the legal framework.

Kamarudeen Ogundele, Special Assistant Communication & Publicity to the Attorney General of the Federation (AGF) and Minister of Justice, conveyed the message to the public. The call for adherence to the court order comes amid rising tensions and threats of a nationwide strike by the labour unions.
