NiMet predicts thunderstorms across multiple Nigerian States this Week; urges public caution amid changing weather patterns

The Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) has issued a weather forecast indicating a mixed bag of sunshine, haze, and thunderstorms across various regions of the country throughout the week.

According to NIMET‘s latest weather outlook released on Sunday in Abuja, Nigerians can expect predominantly sunny and hazy conditions from Monday to Wednesday, with intermittent spells of thunderstorms in select states.

On Monday, the northern region is slated to experience sunny skies, while the North Central cities may witness a blend of sunshine and clouds, with isolated thunderstorms predicted over parts of Kogi and Benue later in the day. Meanwhile, inland areas of the South and coastal regions may encounter cloudy conditions with intermittent sunshine, accompanied by chances of thunderstorms in states like Cross River, Akwa Ibom, Rivers, and Bayelsa.

Moving to Tuesday, NiMet foresees a continuation of sunny and hazy weather over the northern region, with patches of clouds in the North Central cities. In the South, a mix of cloudy skies and sunshine is anticipated, along with morning thunderstorms likely in states such as Edo, Akwa Ibom, Cross River, and Lagos. Later in the day, thunderstorms are expected to sweep across several states in the South, including Abia, Imo, Anambra, Ebonyi, Enugu, Ogun, Ondo, Delta, and others.

Wednesday’s forecast maintains the trend of sunny and hazy conditions in the north, while the North Central cities may experience patches of clouds amidst haze. Similarly, the South is expected to see a blend of cloudy weather and intervals of sunshine during the morning, followed by thunderstorms in states like Edo, Ogun, Rivers, Bayelsa, and Delta in the afternoon and evening.

NiMet has cautioned the public to take necessary precautions, especially in areas prone to thunderstorms, where strong winds may precede rainfall. With temperatures remaining high, particularly in the North, NiMet advises people to stay hydrated, especially those with respiratory issues. It also recommends that children and the elderly wear warm clothing during the night.

Airline operators are urged to stay abreast of updated weather reports and forecasts from NiMet to ensure effective planning and safe operations. As weather patterns shift across the nation, NiMet emphasizes the importance of vigilance and preparedness to mitigate any adverse impacts on communities and individuals alike.
