Renowned Nollywood actress Shan George has successfully retrieved the ₦3.6 million stolen from her bank account by scammers, marking a victory over cybercrime. Taking to her Instagram on May 8, 2024, George expressed profound gratitude to her bank and the individuals who aided in recovering her funds, extending heartfelt prayers for their support during her financial ordeal.

During a live session on Instagram, George recounted the harrowing experience of falling victim to the scam, revealing that her money was siphoned while she sought her bank statement for visa application purposes. Detailing the deception, she disclosed how a fraudulent email, purportedly from Zenith Bank, lured her into unwittingly disclosing sensitive information, leading to the unauthorized transfer of funds from her account.

“I had tweeted to attract the attention of the bank or the people in charge. I was asking my bank how many days it would take to get the statement so I tagged them. So this person who targeted me sent me an email and I responded to the mail. So the mail was saying that I could apply for it online on the Zenith website to have it sent to my email. So I’m telling you that the way they took the money away, like alert after alert after alert,” George recounted.

The successful recovery of the stolen funds follows George’s public plea for assistance on social media after discovering the unauthorized withdrawal of ₦3.6 million from her account by an individual identified as Cecilia Chiagoziem Okoro on May 3, 2024. Within an hour of the fraudulent activity, George took to Instagram, urgently appealing to Zenith Bank and Opay.ng for intervention, expressing distress over her financial predicament and its impact on her livelihood and family.

“I’m left koboless right now, wetin I go eat wit my children 😢😢😢😢. @zenithbankplc @opay.ng please help me, my account at zenith has been wipped clean just now, paid into Opay,” she lamented.

George’s recovery of the stolen funds stands as a testament to the resilience and determination in combatting cybercrime, underscoring the importance of vigilance and proactive measures in safeguarding against fraudulent activities. As she expresses gratitude for the support received during her ordeal, her experience serves as a cautionary tale, highlighting the ever-present threat of online scams and the imperative of staying vigilant to protect personal and financial information in the digital age.
