A senior officer of the Nigeria Customs Service on Tuesday died while facing a probe panel of the House of Representatives in Abuja.
The incident occurred after the officer whose name is not given suddenly slumped while offering some explanations on the financial remittances of the Service before the House Committee.
The spokesperson of the House, Akin Rotimi Jr., confirmed the passing of the “esteemed official of the Nigeria Customs Service” in a statement Tuesday afternoon.
“During the engagement, which occurred around 1.00pm on Tuesday, June 25, 2024, the official developed sudden health complications. Despite the immediate and diligent efforts of first responders and medical personnel at the National Assembly Clinic, he unfortunately passed away”, Mr Rotimi said.
He said the name of the deceased is not disclosed out of respect for the family
“The House of Representatives extends its heartfelt condolences to the family, friends, and colleagues of the deceased during this difficult time. We recognize the significant contributions he made to the Nigeria Customs Service and to our nation”, the spokesperson further said.
He said the House is ready to support efforts to unravel the circumstances surrounding the sudden demise of the officer and is cooperating fully with the authorities for the right protocols.
