Police in Lagos arrest two women for selling newborn twins

In a shocking case of child trafficking, Lagos State Police Command operatives have apprehended two women, Ujunwa Una and Chinelo Igbechionwu, for conspiracy and child sales.

The suspects were caught by patrol officers from Ojodu Division at Berger bus-stop on September 9, 2024, while traveling with two six-day-old newborn baby girls from Abia State, the police spokesperson Benjamin Hundeyin said.

A Good Samaritan had tipped off the police about the suspicious individuals.

Upon interrogation, the suspects confessed to the crime, revealing they were paid ₦150,000 to transport the babies to Lagos.

They claimed the mother sold the babies due to her inability to provide proper care.

“We were paid ₦150,000 to transport the babies to Lagos,” the suspects admitted. “The mother of the babies sold them because she couldn’t give them proper care.”

The case has been transferred to the Gender Unit of the Command, and the newborns have been placed in a motherless babies’ home for proper care and medical evaluation.

The suspects were arraigned on Thursday, September 19, 2024, while investigations continue to apprehend other conspirators.
