Hoodlums set BRT bus ablaze after death of driver in Lagos road accident

A commercial bus driver was killed on Tuesday morning in accident that occurred after a collision  between his vehicle, -a 14-seater Volkswagen bus and a BRT bus, at Ifako Bridge outward the Third Mainland Bridge, in Ogudu area of Lagos.

The Lagos Traffic Management Authority said the commercial bus somersaulted twice and the driver died instantly following the impact of the collision.

A statement by the agency’s Director of Public Affairs and Enlightenment Department, Adebayo Taofiq, said the collision was as a result of loss of control due to over speeding by the commercial bus driver.

Taofiq said 7 passengers with various degrees of injuries were rescued from the mini bus. He added that preliminary investigation revealed that the fully loaded commercial bus was coming from Lagos Island and heading to Ogudu when the accident occurred.

The agency said some hoodlums decided to set the BRT bus on fire after discovering that the driver of the commercial bus had died.

“While other emergency responders including Traffic Police Officers supported Officials of Lastma at the accident scene, on hearing of the death of the commercial driver whose body was lying beside the upturned commercial bus, hoodlums in the area set ablaze the bus belonging to the Lagos State Bus Service Limited.”, LASTMA said.

The Director of the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service, Adeseye Margaret, also confirmed the incident and said the body of the victim was recovered and handed over to the police from the Ogudu Division.

The BRT bus driver and his assistant, who were involved in the collision, escaped with minor injuries according to Adeseye.

The development resulted in a long vehicular traffic on the corridor before the vehicles were cleared off the road.
