Gallant Falcons bow out of World Cup

Nigeria’s Super Falcons put up a spirited performance but fell 4-2 on penalties to their English counterparts who advanced to the quarter-finals of the Women’s World Cup.

The Nigerian team were well organized tactically with a game plan that frustrated their opponents who were reduced to 10 players following the straight red to Lauren James for a stamp on Nigeria’s Alozie.

But after their last-16 tie in Brisbane finished 0-0 at the end of 120 full and extra time, the Super Falcons failed to convert two of their kicks as the English ran away with a 4-2 shootout win.

The Super Falcons were looking to qualify for the quarter finals for the first time but Chloe Kelly scored the winning kick in the shoot-out to take the lionesses who are European champions to a last-eight tie against Colombia or Jamaica.
