The Abia State Government has initiated an investigation into the tragic death of a student from Abia State University (ABSU), who lost his life during a clash between rival cult groups.
NAN reports that Okey Kanu, the state Commissioner for Information and Culture, announced this development on Monday during a press briefing following the State Executive Council meeting held at Government House, Umuahia.
Addressing the media, Kanu expressed the government’s concern over the recent unrest at ABSU and assured the public that remedial actions were being taken to restore peace and order on campus.
“In light of recent skirmishes within certain student groups at Abia State University, Uturu, the government has taken immediate steps to address the situation,” Kanu stated. “Security agencies have been deployed to ABSU to maintain control, and a thorough investigation has been launched into the incident.”
Kanu urged students across all tertiary institutions in the state to refrain from violence and any activities that could jeopardize their safety and academic pursuits.
Ferdinand Ekeoma, the Special Adviser to the Governor on Media and Publicity, also commented on the situation, revealing that initial reports indicated a cult clash at ABSU. However, he emphasized that the government was awaiting official briefings from security agencies to ascertain the full details of the incident.
“As a government, we have promptly dispatched officials to engage with relevant stakeholders and gather accurate information regarding the incident,” Ekeoma stated. “While reports suggest a cult clash, we are yet to confirm the specifics, and we will provide updates as soon as we receive further details.”
In an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), Maureen Chinaka, the Public Relations Officer of the Abia Police Command, confirmed the incident, stating that a student from ABSU had been fatally injured during a clash between rival cult groups.
Chinaka assured the public that law enforcement agencies, in collaboration with the military, had swiftly responded to the scene of the crime, leading to the evacuation of the victim’s body and the recovery of crucial evidence.
“Our investigation is ongoing, and we are committed to keeping the public informed as we progress,” Chinaka affirmed.
