Commonwealth Secretary-General Patricia Scotland has warned Nigerians against yielding to those who are bent on leading the country into violence during the elections.
Leading a high-level delegation to the Minister of Foreign, Geoffrey Onyeama, in Abuja, late on Wednesday, Scotland, said that Nigeria has inspired the rest of the world by its fortitude and resolve to remain on the path of peace.
The Commonwealth leader expressed confidence in the readiness of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to conduct Saturday’s poll.
She explained that the Commonwealth delegation was in the country to witness and participate in the celebration of what Nigeria has achieved through the peace commission led by Gen. Abdulsalami Abubakar.
Scotland who acknowledged that the youths form more than 70 per cent of registered voters in this year’s elections, encouraged all, especially the leaders, to pledge to peace.
According to her, about 2.5 billion people in Commonwealth countries are very much ready to applaud Nigeria in the next peaceful transition of power from this administration to the next.
The Minister of Foreign Affairs, Geoffrey Onyeama, says the federal government appreciate the relationship between Nigeria and the Association.
He noted that the presence of the delegation will inspire the government to ensure Buhari’s vision for the smooth transition of political power is achieved.
