FRSC launches ‘Operation Falcon Speed Mobile Control’ to combat traffic offences in FCT
In a resolute effort to instill traffic discipline and ensure road safety, the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) has announced the successful conclusion of “Operation Zero Tolerance” in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT). During the yuletide season, from December 15, 2023, to January 15, 2024, the FRSC recorded a significant feat, apprehending 4,907 individuals for a staggering 6,339 traffic offenses. The Sector Commander, Muta’a Chorrie, shared these insights in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Abuja.
The operation targeted prevalent traffic violations such as non-use of seat belts, use of phones while driving, and over-speeding—identified as major contributors to road accidents during the period. The data collected during “Operation Zero Tolerance” underscored the urgency to address these issues comprehensively.
In response to the findings, the FRSC has unveiled its next strategic move – “Operation Falcon Speed Mobile Control.” This initiative aims not only to curb the excessive use of mobile phones but also to significantly reduce the frequency of road traffic accidents across the six area councils of the FCT. Muta’a Chorrie, the Sector Commander, emphasised the multifaceted impact of this operation, stating, “This will help check all the things that cause road accidents and curb them to the barest minimum.”
To enhance its operational efficiency, the FRSC has equipped its personnel with raider guns and other logistics in preparation for the challenges of 2024. The commitment to road safety is further highlighted by the Corps’ decision to embark on intensive sensitisation campaigns in churches, mosques, and schools – institutions with substantial populations.
Chorrie outlined the outreach plan, stating, “The Corps would be visiting churches on Sundays and mosques on Fridays, as well as various public and private schools.” The objective is not only to enforce traffic regulations but also to foster a driving culture and educate road users on effective traffic management in the FCT.
Addressing motorists directly, particularly commercial drivers, the Sector Commander appealed for strict adherence to traffic rules. He emphasised that cooperation with the FRSC would not only lead to a reduction in road accidents with fatalities but also contribute to the preservation of lives and properties in the territory.
As the FRSC shifts gears from the success of “Operation Zero Tolerance” to the implementation of “Operation Falcon Speed Mobile Control,” the organisation is poised to make significant strides in promoting road safety, instilling discipline among motorists, and ultimately saving lives on the roads of the Federal Capital Territory.
