House of Representatives threatens CBN governor with warrant of arrest over Naira redesign policy

<span;>Speaker of Nigeria’s House of Representatives has threatened to issue a warrant of arrest to the Inspector General of police,Alkali Baba to compel the Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria, Godwin Emefiele to honour the invitation of the lawmakers.

<span;>Gbajabiamila who read the Riots Act after reading a letter signed by the deputy governor,corporate services of the Central Bank of Nigeria on why the governor of the apex bank cannot honour the invitation of the House, said the action of the governor and his team depicts flagrant abuse to the rule of law.

<span;>Gbajabiamila said though, Emefiele is a friend, but he would not hesitate to carry out his constitutional responsibility.

<span;>The CBN in a letter said Emefiele is on the president’s delegation to Dakar,hence his failure to appear before the House.

<span;>Ado Doguwa,Chairman of the ad hoc committee set up to interface with the CBN and bank managing directors on scarcity of the new notes and the deadline for the old notes had briefed the House on the failure of the CBN to appear before the adhoc committee before the pronouncement was made by the speaker.

<span;>Gbajabiamila said the refusal by the CBN and bank MDs to honour the invitation by the House is a blatant disregard to the people and an insult to the parliament.

<span;>He said: “If at the end of today, there is further disregard, I will not hesitate to issue a warrant to the IGP to compel the arrest of CBN and MDs of banks.

<span;>”Apparently, it appears the governor amd his people will not be showing up today but I will still them the benefit of the doubt, they have a few more hours to rethink and show up.”

<span;>He directed the committee to hold on and await the arrival of the invited bank officials amd said appropriate would be taken if they failed to show up.
