Lagos State Government crushes 1,500 motorcycles in ongoing crackdown on prohibited routes

In a firm stance on maintaining public safety, the Lagos State Government executed the crushing of 1,500 apprehended motorcycles, commonly known as “okada,” enforcing the ban on their operation in specific areas. The crushing exercise, conducted at the Taskforce yard in Alausa, Ikeja, signals the government’s unwavering commitment to curbing unauthorized motorcycle activities.

Supervised by the Lagos State Commissioner for Transportation, Mr. Oluwaseun Osiyemi, the operation aims to dissuade okada operators from flouting the ban in the Ten Local Government Areas (LGs) and Fifteen Local Council Development Areas (LCDAs) designated by the state authorities.

Mr. Osiyemi emphasized that this regular crushing initiative intends to send a clear message to okada operators, riders, and passengers, warning them to steer clear of restricted areas. Violators face the risk of a three-year prison sentence if apprehended and prosecuted under the Transport Reform Law (TSRL) of 2018.

“The ban on Okada in specified regions is crucial for maintaining order, reducing risks associated with unauthorized motorcycle operation and also improving security,” stated Commissioner Osiyemi. The prohibited LGAs include Kosofe, Oshodi-Isolo, Somolu, Mushin, Apapa, Ikeja, Lagos Island, Lagos Mainland, Surulere, and Eti-Osa. The corresponding LCDAs include Ojodu, Onigbongbo, Lagos Island East, Yaba and Coker Aguda, among others.

Commissioner Osiyemi urged okada operators to adhere to the ban in restricted areas, asserting that Okada is not a safe means of commercial transportation and does not align with the state’s transport policy.

In attendance at the crushing exercise were the Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Transportation, Mr. Olawale Musa, and other officials of the Ministry. The Lagos State Government reiterates its dedication to promoting safety, reducing traffic-related risks, and maintaining order on the roads through stringent enforcement of relevant laws.
