Anambra School initiates counselling for students after tragic lightning incident claims lives

Following the recent tragedy where three students lost their lives due to a lightning strike at Tansi International College in Awka, the school’s management has commenced post-trauma counselling sessions for affected students.

Rev. Fr. Fidelis Izuako, the college’s Principal, revealed on Wednesday during a condolence visit by the Sports Writers Association of Nigeria (SWAN), Anambra Chapter, that the lightning strike had left an indelible mark on the school.

The principal explained that the counselling sessions aim to address the psychological impact on students, especially those who were classmates of the victims. Fear and trauma have led students to alter their living arrangements, and psychologists are actively working to help them overcome shock and fears.

“We have psychologists who have been coming to talk with them and helping them to overcome the shock and their fears,” said Rev. Fr. Izuako.

He noted that the six students who survived the lightning strike have fully recovered and are currently with their parents to regain confidence before returning to school. Once back, they will undergo personalized counselling.

Rev. Fr. Izuako expressed gratitude to Nigerians and the sports writers’ community for their solidarity with the school during this challenging time.

Chimezie Anaso, Chairman of Anambra SWAN, leading the delegation, extended condolences to the school management and the parents of the deceased students. Anaso commended the college for its commitment to sports development and encouraged them not to let the unfortunate incident hinder future sports activities.

On November 4, lightning struck the school’s football pitch while students were playing in the rain, hitting nine of them and tragically claiming the lives of three.
