President Tinubu urges ECOWAS leaders to prioritize good governance in the fight against coups

In a significant address at the 64th ordinary session of the ECOWAS Authority of Heads of State and Government, President Bola Tinubu, as the Chairman, emphasized the crucial role of good governance in preventing authoritarian takeovers and unconstitutional changes of government in West Africa.

President Tinubu underscored the importance of addressing citizens’ concerns through socio-economic transformation and development as a means to secure popular support and discourage military interventions in civilian processes.

 

The President also commended President George Weah of Liberia for his commitment to democratic ideals, urging leaders to emulate such conduct. Furthermore, President Tinubu addressed the distraction caused by the recently formed ‘Alliance of Sahel States’ by some ECOWAS-member states under military rule, emphasizing ECOWAS’ unwavering commitment to democracy and good governance.

 

President Tinubu concluded by urging fellow leaders to protect democracy in the face of recent disturbances in Sierra Leone and Guinea Bissau, emphasizing ECOWAS’ zero tolerance for unconstitutional changes of government. The President’s call resonated with a commitment to uphold democratic principles and support democratically elected governments in the region.
