South Africa dismisses false alarm on safety concerns for Nigerians amidst AFCON match tensions

In response to a recent advisory issued by the High Commission of the Federal Republic of Nigeria in Pretoria, the Department of International Relations and Cooperation (DIRCO) of South Africa has moved swiftly to allay concerns and dispel misconceptions surrounding the safety of Nigerians in the country.

The advisory, deemed regrettable by DIRCO, purportedly raised alarm and fostered unnecessary tension among South African citizens and the Nigerian community residing in or visiting South Africa. It expressed apprehension regarding potential safety risks associated with the recent soccer match between the South African national soccer team, Bafana Bafana, and their Nigerian counterparts, the Super Eagles.

Asserting South Africa’s commitment to fostering cordial relations and ensuring the safety of all residents and visitors, DIRCO refuted the notion of any inherent threat posed by the sports-loving nation toward Nigerian citizens. The department emphasised that past encounters between the two nations’ soccer teams had not resulted in incidents of soccer hooliganism or violence among South Africans.

“We are confident that the spirit of sportsmanship prevails among our citizens, and we reject the notion of any hostility directed towards Nigerians,” stated a representative from DIRCO.

In light of the advisory’s potential to exacerbate tensions and undermine diplomatic relations, DIRCO reiterated its stance of openness to dialogue and collaboration with diplomatic representatives. The department urged the High Commission of Nigeria and other relevant stakeholders to engage directly with DIRCO to address any concerns pertaining to diplomatic matters or the welfare of Nigerian nationals in South Africa.

This proactive approach aligns with South Africa’s commitment to upholding international norms of diplomacy and ensuring the peaceful coexistence of diverse communities within its borders. By fostering open channels of communication and cooperation, DIRCO seeks to reaffirm the longstanding bonds of friendship and solidarity between South Africa and Nigeria.

Inquiries regarding the matter can be directed to Mr. Clayson Monyela, Spokesperson for DIRCO, at 082 884 5974.

The Department of International Relations and Cooperation issued this statement from the OR Tambo Building in Pretoria, reaffirming its dedication to promoting mutual understanding, respect, and collaboration among nations.
