Lagos invites residents to shape the future with the Lagos Island Model City plan

The Lagos State Government has invited residents to actively participate in shaping the future of Lagos Island by providing input for the Lagos Island Model City Plan. Dr. Oluyinka Olumide, the Commissioner for Physical Planning and Urban Development, reiterated this call during a statement delivered on Wednesday at Alausa, Lagos.

Highlighting the significance of community involvement, Olumide emphasized the need for residents’ input to ensure that the development plan accurately reflects the aspirations and needs of the people of Lagos. He announced that a meeting is scheduled for March 7 at the Muson Centre, Onikan, where stakeholders can contribute their ideas and perspectives.

Describing the upcoming meeting as the “final stage” for stakeholders’ input, Olumide underscored the importance of inclusivity in the planning process. He stressed the government’s commitment to developing a plan that addresses the diverse aspirations of Lagos residents.

Olumide outlined the extensive planning process undertaken since the inception of the technical committee in August 2021. He highlighted the bottom-up approach adopted, which involved engaging with communities directly affected by the plan. This initial engagement facilitated direct interactions between the government and the benefiting communities, allowing for a comprehensive understanding of their needs and concerns.

Furthermore, Olumide mentioned the public display of the final draft of the plan at four different centers across the plan area. This display served as an opportunity for residents to review and provide feedback on the draft plan before its finalization.

“Given the importance of this process to the enactment of an enduring Model City Plan that the people will own, I enjoin Lagosians to participate robustly at the stakeholders meeting, billed to commence at 10:00 a.m., on the day,” Olumide urged.

He elaborated on the goal of the Lagos Island Model City Plan, emphasizing its aim to leverage the unique characteristics of the area for sustainable future growth and socio-economic development. Olumide reiterated Lagos’s vision as the preferred investment destination in Sub-Saharan Africa, highlighting the pivotal role of the Model City Plan in achieving this objective.

The invitation to residents to contribute to the Lagos Island Model City Plan underscores the government’s commitment to inclusive governance and sustainable urban development. By actively engaging with stakeholders, the government seeks to ensure that the development plan aligns with the aspirations and priorities of Lagos residents, paving the way for a prosperous and resilient future for Lagos Island and its inhabitants.
