Nathaniel Bassey files petition to IGP over alleged defamation by social media users

Renowned gospel singer Nathaniel Bassey has taken legal action by filing a petition to the Inspector General of Police (IGP) Kayode Egbetokun, alleging defamation against four individuals who accused him of paternity fraud.

Bassey, through his legal representatives – Peter Abraham, Uche Matthew, Gbenga Agunloye, and Anthony Abia – submitted the petition to the IGP on April 1, 2024. The petition calls for a thorough investigation and prosecution of the accused individuals for criminal defamation and cyberstalking.

According to reports by The Nation, the four social media users, identified as Okoronkwo Ejike, Kingsley Ibeh, Terrence Ekot, and DJ Spoiltkid, allegedly spread false claims suggesting that Bassey fathered the son of fellow gospel singer Mercy Chinwo.

In the petition, Bassey’s lawyers emphasized the damaging impact of the defamatory statements on their client’s reputation and called for swift action from law enforcement authorities. They highlighted specific instances where the accused individuals made slanderous remarks on various social media platforms, including Twitter and X.

The lawyers stated, “Our client is a gospel music minister whose songs and ministrations have impacted the lives of so many from different walks of life across the globe.” They continued, “These nefarious acts of these suspects, if not immediately dealt with, will continue to destroy our client’s image, injure his reputation, assassinate his character, and cast aspersions on the good name built by our client over the years.”

The petition cited relevant sections of the Criminal Code Act and the Cybercrimes (Prohibition, Prevention, etc.) Act, alleging that the actions of the accused individuals violated these laws.

Bassey’s legal team urged the IGP to take decisive action to investigate the matter, apprehend the suspects, and ensure that justice is served. They emphasized the importance of deterring such behavior to prevent further damage to their client’s reputation and to uphold the principles of justice and fairness.

“Consequently, we urge you to use your good offices to, in the interest of justice, investigate this matter, arrest, and bring the suspect to justice, which will serve as a deterrent to others,” the lawyers stated in the petition.

As the legal proceedings unfold, Bassey remains committed to defending his integrity and protecting his reputation from unwarranted attacks. The petition to the IGP underscores his determination to seek justice and hold those responsible for defamation accountable for their actions.
