Tiwa Savage, the renowned Nigerian singer-songwriter, has unveiled the trailer for her highly anticipated film, ‘Water & Garri’, scheduled to premiere on Prime Video on May 10, 2024. The movie delves into the life of Aisha, portrayed by Savage herself, an ambitious fashion designer who embarks on a poignant journey back to her hometown following a family tragedy. However, Aisha’s return reveals a starkly transformed reality, marred by escalating violence and societal tension.

Directed by Meji Alabi and produced by Unbound Studio and JM Films, ‘Water & Garri’ was filmed against the picturesque backdrop of Cape Coast and Ghana. The movie features a talented ensemble cast including Mike Afolarin, Andrew Bunting, and Jemima Osunde, alongside Savage in the lead role.

In a multifaceted role, Savage not only stars as Aisha but also assumes the mantle of executive producer, contributing to the creative vision and ensuring the film’s integrity. Additionally, Savage showcases her musical prowess by composing and performing the original soundtrack for ‘Water & Garri’.

The film’s title draws inspiration from Savage’s five-track EP released in 2021, which bears the same name. The EP, ‘Water & Garri’, features a stellar lineup of collaborations including tracks with Nas and Rich King, Amaarae, Brandy, and Tay Iwar. Through her artistry, Savage seamlessly intertwines music and cinema, creating a cohesive narrative that resonates with audiences on multiple levels.

Describing ‘Water & Garri’ as a female-driven story of love and empowerment, Savage underscores the importance of representing diverse perspectives in Nollywood. She emphasizes the need for more narratives told from a female point of view, advocating for greater inclusion and authenticity in African cinema.

“It’s a story first of all told by a female from a female point of view. I’m always an advocate for that and I don’t think we have enough of that in the space of Nollywood and just in Africa in general. We do have but I don’t think we have enough. It’s refreshing for me. It’s a story about love, female empowerment,” Savage remarked, highlighting the thematic depth and significance of the film.

As anticipation mounts for the premiere of ‘Water & Garri’, audiences eagerly await the opportunity to immerse themselves in Savage’s captivating storytelling and witness her cinematic debut unfold on the global stage. With its compelling narrative, stellar cast, and Savage’s multifaceted contributions, ‘Water & Garri’ promises to be a cinematic tour de force that leaves a lasting impact on viewers worldwide.
