Minimum wage: Labour insists on strike despite National Assembly’s plea
After a three-hour meeting on Sunday , the National Assembly’s bid to avert the impending indefinite nationwide strike by organized labour proved unsuccessful.
Labour leaders remained resolute in their decision to proceed with the strike on Monday.
Senate President Godswill Akpabio had appealed to the workers to suspend the strike and return to the negotiation table. However, the labour unions insisted on going on with the action.
According to House Speaker Tajudeen Abbas, the National Assembly and labour agreed that the Federal Government should reinstate the N35,000 wage award introduced in October last year, but halted in February, until a consensus on the national minimum wage is reached.
Festus Osifo, President of the Trade Union Congress, rejected the National Assembly’s appeal to call off the strike, stating that labour leaders must consult with their state-level organs and cannot unilaterally cancel the strike.
