Court approves virtual testimony in Emefiele’s trial
In a significant development, a High Court of the Federal Capital Tereritory (FCT) in Maitama has granted the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) permission to present two witnesses via video link in the ongoing trial of former Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) Governor Godwin Emefiele.
Emefiele faces serious allegations, including a six-count charge related to the unlawful printing of new naira notes. During a ruling yesterday, Justice Maryanne Anenih authorized the EFCC’s request to allow the testimony of witnesses currently residing in the United States. The court has scheduled the next hearing for October 17, following the conclusion of testimony from the prosecution’s fourth witness, Edward Adamu, a former Deputy Governor of Corporate Services at the CBN.
As the trial unfolds, the EFCC’s lawyer, A. O. Mohammed, confirmed that the upcoming witnesses are based abroad, highlighting the complexities of the case as it moves forward.
