EFCC detains Cubana Chief Priest ahead of naira abuse charge

Renowned socialite Pascal Okechukwu, better known as Cubana Chief Priest, is set to face legal proceedings today, Wednesday, April 17, 2024, as the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) detains him in anticipation of his arraignment. The EFCC has reportedly taken this step as part of its intensified crackdown on naira abuse incidents, with high-profile figures coming under scrutiny.

Okechukwu is expected to appear before Justice Kehinde Ogundare of the Federal High Court in Lagos, where he will be arraigned on three counts related to the abuse of the national currency at social events. The charges allege that he engaged in the spraying and manipulation of funds in ₦500 notes, an act deemed unlawful under Section 21(1) of the Central Bank Act 2007.

This legal action follows a suit filed by the EFCC’s prosecutor, Rotimi Oyedepo (SAN), and a team of seven other lawyers on April 4, 2024. The commission accuses the businessman of indulging in the illicit activity during a social gathering at Eko Hotel on February 13, 2024, where he reportedly spent two hours dancing and tampering with the currency.

The EFCC’s move to prosecute Okechukwu echoes recent convictions in similar cases, notably that of controversial figure Idris Okuneye, popularly known as Bobrisky, who received a six-month jail term for the same offence. In light of these developments, the EFCC has intensified its investigations into other celebrities allegedly involved in naira abuse incidents.

Addressing the matter, EFCC spokesperson Dele Oyewale emphasized the commission’s unwavering commitment to upholding the law without bias. He stated, “Many celebrities have provided valuable information to the commission, and more are being summoned for questioning. The EFCC remains steadfast in its resolve to enforce laws against financial crimes, irrespective of the individual’s status or influence.”

Despite the plethora of videos depicting instances of naira abuse circulating on social media platforms, the EFCC has clarified that its focus will be primarily on new cases of such infractions. This clarification underscores the agency’s determination to tackle the issue effectively and deter future occurrences.

As Cubana Chief Priest prepares to face the legal consequences of his alleged actions, the case highlights the growing scrutiny on individuals engaging in illicit financial activities. The EFCC’s proactive stance sends a clear message that no one is above the law, and perpetrators will be held accountable for their actions.

The outcome of this legal battle will undoubtedly have ramifications for both the accused and the broader social scene, underscoring the importance of responsible financial conduct in society.

Stay tuned for updates as the case unfolds, shaping the trajectory of the ongoing fight against financial crimes in Nigeria.
