ASUU, OAU, SSANU join nationwide indefinite strike

Members of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) at Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU), led by Chairman Prof Tony Odiwe, have confirmed their adherence to the nationwide indefinite strike order issued by their union leaders.

In an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Tuesday in Ile-Ife, Prof Tony Odiwe affirmed the compliance of ASUU members with the directive, emphasizing that the strike would conclude as soon as the highest authority issued the order. He also condemned the recent assault on NLC President, Joe Ajaero, which played a role in the initiation of the strike.

Additionally, Comrade Ademola Junaid, the Branch Secretary of the Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities (SSANU) at OAU, revealed that their union had joined the nationwide indefinite strike declared by the Nigerian Labour Congress (NLC) and Trade Union Congress (TUC).

Junaid explained that their union’s participation in the strike aligns with the circular sent by the National President, Comrade Ibrahim Aruna, overnight. Despite the recent resumption of students, there was a noticeable lack of attendance to them, and staff members were unable to access their offices due to the ongoing strike.

Speaking on the circumstances that led to the strike, Junaid clarified, “The issue at hand with the national leaders of NLC and TUC that led to the attack in Imo State is just a matter of consultation which required Ajaero’s presence. But things worked out the other way round; the injustice on our president led to the strike.”

He expressed hope that the invited leaders would honor the meeting invitation, stressing that strike-related issues have adverse effects on every Nigerian. Junaid appealed for understanding among citizens to prevent instances of assault leading to strikes and urged leaders to reconsider the national strike, advocating for peace.
