Rivers Assembly extends olive branch: impeachment notice against Governor Fubara withdrawn in historic session

In a groundbreaking turn of events, the Rivers State House of Assembly has officially retracted the impeachment notice against Governor Siminalayi Fubara, marking a significant shift in the political landscape of the state. The decision, announced during a session on the house floor, was described as a gesture of respect for the President, echoing the culmination of high-stakes negotiations that have unfolded in recent days.

This pivotal decision materialized during a session that involved 26 lawmakers loyal to former Governor Nyesom Wike, held at the House of Assembly Complex on Wednesday morning, December 20, 2023. The political atmosphere in Rivers State had been fraught with tension, largely fueled by a power struggle between Governor Fubara and Wike, currently serving as the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory.

The recent turn of events follows a crucial peace deal brokered by President Bola Tinubu on Monday, bringing Governor Fubara and his predecessor, Nyesom Wike, to the negotiation table. The peace talks, attended by key figures including National Security Adviser Nuhu Ribadu, resulted in a commitment from both factions to withdraw all court cases and make other concessions, fostering an environment conducive to reconciliation.

The roots of the political discord can be traced back to a schism within the House of Assembly, where 27 lawmakers crossed party lines to join the All Progressives Congress (APC). This division led to parallel sittings, an attempted impeachment of Governor Fubara, and even the unprecedented demolition of the Assembly complex, symbolizing the intensity of the power struggle.

It is noteworthy that the impeachment proceedings against Governor Fubara commenced on the 30th of October 2023, less than 24 hours after the House of Assembly complex faced a violent attack. The withdrawal of the impeachment notice now signals a potential turning point, offering a glimmer of hope for stability and unity within the state’s political sphere.

The decision to rescind the impeachment notice, coupled with the broader commitment to cease legal hostilities, reflects a willingness on both sides to prioritize the interests of Rivers State over personal and political rivalries. As the state collectively exhales in the wake of this development, the resounding question remains: Will this newfound accord pave the way for a more harmonious and collaborative political future for Rivers State? Only time will unfold the intricacies of this transformative moment in the state’s political history.
