Legal maestro Niyi Akintola receives unprecedented honour as Asiwaju of Ido land

In a historic ceremony, Chief Niyi Akintola, a distinguished Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN), was installed as the Asiwaju of Ido land by the Traditional Council in Ido Local Government Area of Oyo State. The prestigious event unfolded within the premises of the council secretariat, drawing notable personalities, including Akintola’s wife, Justice Rachel Akintola, former Oyo State Head of Service Alhaja Ololade Agboola, and the state Commissioner for Information, Dotun Oyelade.

Expressing his elation at the occasion, Akintola described the honour as unprecedented in the history of the council area. Notably, it marked the first instance where all traditional rulers in Ido local government collectively endorsed an individual for the conferment of a chieftaincy title.

Addressing the audience, Akintola acknowledged the significance of the recognition, stating, “For the traditional rulers in the Ido local government area to have counted me worthy for the Asiwaju of Ido title out of all the sons and daughters of Ido land, it is unprecedented. This is a signal that it is getting to the time I should quit politics. With my new title, I need to be open to everybody; I’m not Asiwaju of PDP or APC; I’m for everybody. I’m thinking seriously about it, and that’s what informed my initial rejection of the chieftaincy title, not only in Ido but in many other towns across the state.”

In his commitment to the community, Akintola pledged to continue making a positive impact on the lives of the people of the council area. Acknowledging the challenges faced by Ido, including insecurity and infrastructural development, he expressed his dedication to addressing these issues and enhancing the well-being of the residents.

The installation ceremony drew attention not only for the honour bestowed upon Akintola but also for the resonance of his commitment to societal development. Traditional rulers, in their separate remarks, urged other well-meaning Nigerians to emulate Akintola’s exemplary gesture and contribute significantly to the progress and development of Ibadanland.

They emphasized the undeniable commitment and impact that Akintola has demonstrated in shaping society, underscoring the importance of individuals of his pedigree in influencing positive change. The installation of Niyi Akintola as the Asiwaju of Ido land serves as a testament to his remarkable standing in the community and the trust placed in him by traditional leaders.
