Over 163,000 Nigerians rejoice: FG unveils massive success in Tinubu's yuletide transportation subsidy program

In an extraordinary show of generosity and commitment to the welfare of Nigerian citizens, the Federal Government proudly announces that over 163,000 passengers have benefited from President Bola Tinubu’s revolutionary End of Year Transportation Subsidy Programme. The Committee on Implementation, led by the Minister of Solid Minerals Resources, Dr. Dele Alake, released a comprehensive progress report, highlighting the program’s staggering success in providing free transportation and substantial fare subsidies to ease the financial burden on citizens during the festive season.

A triumph in numbers: More than 163,000 passengers touched by the initiative

Chairman of the Committee, Dr. Dele Alake, shared the outstanding achievements of the program in a detailed report presented on Monday in Lagos. The initiative, which commenced on December 19, 2023, witnessed an overwhelming response from the public, showcasing the profound impact of the transportation subsidy.

The report revealed that from December 21 to December 31, 2023, a total of 71,000 passengers were conveyed by the Nigerian Railway Corporation (NRC), marking a resounding success for the initiative. Additionally, buses operating under the umbrella of the Association of Luxury Bus Owners of Nigeria (ALBON) carried an impressive 77,122 passengers during the same period. Moreover, 652 bus trips originating from Oshodi Interchange in Lagos transported 15,766 passengers, collectively contributing to a grand total of 163,878 passengers benefiting from the Presidential Yuletide Transportation Subsidy within the first 10 days of the program.

Dr. Alake celebrated the magnitude of the initiative, stating, “The transportation rebate is a demonstration of the level of love the President has for Nigerians.” The success of the scheme was further emphasized by the dual approach taken, with train-bound passengers enjoying free service, while road travelers received a 50% subsidy on fares. This strategic move aimed to alleviate the financial strain on citizens during the festive season, particularly in light of global challenges like the ongoing pandemic.

Subsidy details and impact: A testament to Presidential empathy

The subsidy figures varied based on the travel routes, with travelers enjoying significant savings. For instance, a Lagos-Abuja road trip fare of ₦43,000 saw a ₦21,500 reduction, while a Lagos-Onitsha bus fare of ₦30,000 saw a ₦15,000 subsidy. These substantial savings reflected the President’s commitment to providing tangible relief to citizens facing economic challenges.

Dr. Alake reiterated that the program was not merely a logistical exercise but a manifestation of the President’s empathy and love for the Nigerian people, especially during a season culturally and emotionally marked by travel to hometowns.

Remedial measures and ongoing collaboration: Ensuring program success

While celebrating the achievements, Dr. Alake acknowledged the committee’s commitment to addressing identified gaps in the program’s execution. Remedial measures included the addition of two more routes and collaboration with various stakeholders, such as the National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW), State-owned Transport Companies, and the Private Transport Operators Association (PTONA). The committee actively engaged in sensitizing the public through media platforms, fostering cooperation among passengers and bus companies.

As the program continues, Dr. Alake appealed for continued cooperation from passengers and bus companies, urging them to manage the return of passengers to their respective bases efficiently. The ongoing success of the initiative relies on the faith, integrity, and patriotism demonstrated by bus companies in applying the 50% subsidy and ensuring an adequate number of vehicles are available. The committee remains vigilant, monitoring compliance and intervening whenever necessary.

A secure return journey: Government agencies prepared for passengers

Dr. Alake assured the public that relevant government security agencies had been briefed to ensure the smooth embarkation and disembarkation of passengers at various parks. As the program enters the return leg of the trip, travelers are encouraged to initiate their return journey early to secure seats on coaches and buses.

In essence, the monumental success of President Tinubu’s Yuletide Transportation Subsidy Program stands as a testament to the government’s commitment to the well-being of its citizens. The initiative not only provides tangible relief to Nigerians during a festive season but also underscores the government’s dedication to fostering a society where the welfare of the people remains at the forefront of policymaking.
