Commitment to a press-friendly environment echoed as NAN staff visits commissioner for information and communications.

In a significant step towards fostering a press-friendly environment in Rivers State, Commissioner for Information and Communications, Joe Johnson, affirmed the unwavering commitment of Governor Siminialayi Fubara’s administration to ensuring a conducive workspace for journalists. This declaration came to light during a visit to Johnson’s office by members of the Nigerian News Agency (NAN) staff in the Port Harcourt Zonal Office.

In the course of the meeting, Johnson praised the administration’s dedication to press freedom, emphasizing that though it may not be boastful, the commitment is strong. He urged journalists to responsibly portray the state in a positive light while assuring them that the government is ready to provide the necessary support for their work.

“The present administration in the state is press-friendly, although not very loud. We want to create an environment where journalists can freely and effectively discharge their duties,” Commissioner Johnson asserted. His words reflect a recognition of the pivotal role journalists play in disseminating information and holding those in power accountable.

Acknowledging the vital role played by NAN in news reportage, Johnson commended the agency for its effective coverage and called on them to maintain a balanced and unbiased approach in their reporting. He expressed the government’s willingness to collaborate with NAN, ensuring that accurate and timely information is made available for their reportage.

“NAN, being a media organization that is reliable, disseminates information to various subscribers across the country. We are ready to work hand-in-hand with you to facilitate the flow of information for the benefit of the public,” Johnson affirmed.

The Commissioner’s commitment aligns with the broader vision of Governor Siminialayi Fubara’s administration, which prioritizes transparency, open communication, and a robust relationship with the media. The promise to create a conducive environment for journalists underscores the significance attached to the freedom of the press as a cornerstone of a thriving democracy.

During the visit, Janefrances Oraka, the NAN Port Harcourt Zonal Manager, highlighted the agency’s purpose in seeking effective ways to cover the state. Oraka assured Commissioner Johnson that NAN is poised to work efficiently, projecting the programs, policies, and initiatives of the government, as well as serving the interests of the public.

She also took the opportunity to brief the Commissioner about additional NAN news products, including PR-Wire and SMS, showcasing the agency’s commitment to innovative and diverse methods of news dissemination.

As the visit concluded, it became evident that the synergy between the Rivers State government and the media, particularly NAN, holds the potential to enhance the flow of accurate and timely information, contributing to a well-informed public and fostering a healthy democratic environment. The assurance of a supportive and conducive work environment for journalists signals a positive step forward in the ongoing partnership between the state government and the media fraternity.
