Preliminary investigations unveil illegal mining connection to devastating explosion

In a shocking turn of events, the vibrant city of Ibadan was thrown into chaos on Tuesday evening, as a massive explosion ripped through the Bodija area, causing widespread panic and leaving destruction in its wake. Governor Seyi Makinde of Oyo State, in a press conference following a visit to the scene, disclosed that preliminary investigations by security agencies pointed to explosive devices stored in a house by illegal miners as the cause of the catastrophic blast.

The impact of the explosion, which occurred on the fateful evening of January 16, 2024, was so severe that it claimed the lives of at least two individuals, with an additional 77 sustaining injuries, and countless properties left in ruins. The aftermath saw a wave of devastation across several neighborhoods, including the Governor’s Office, the residence of the former Attorney General and Minister of Justice, Chief Bola Ige, the Oyo State House of Assembly, and numerous homes in Akobo, Sango, Bodija, Apete, New Garage, Eleyele, and Sango.

 

 

The blast left residents and law enforcement authorities bewildered, struggling to comprehend the magnitude of the incident. Governor Makinde, during his visit to the scene, reassured the traumatized citizens that a thorough investigation would be conducted, promising that those found culpable would face the full force of the law.

In a series of updates posted on his official Twitter handle, Governor Makinde revealed, “Preliminary investigations by the security agencies revealed that illegal miners occupying one of the houses in Bodija had stored explosive devices there which caused the blast. The investigations are ongoing. All those found culpable for this will be brought to book.”

The governor, visibly shaken by the tragic turn of events, expressed his deep condolences to the families of the deceased and assured the injured of the government’s commitment to covering their medical bills. “In total, we have 77 injured victims so far, most of whom were treated and discharged and 2 fatalities. May their souls rest in peace, and may God give their loved ones the fortitude to bear this irreparable loss,” Makinde stated.

He also announced immediate measures to provide temporary accommodation for those whose houses were affected, pledging support to help them rebuild their lives. Governor Makinde’s swift response underscored his determination to alleviate the suffering of the affected residents and bring normalcy back to the beleaguered community.

The governor’s call for calm resonated throughout the state, as he urged residents to stay away from the immediate scene of the incident, allowing rescue operations to proceed smoothly. Emergency services and relevant agencies were promptly deployed to carry out comprehensive search and rescue operations.

As the investigation unfolds, questions arise about the extent of illegal mining activities in the region and the potential dangers they pose to unsuspecting communities.
