FCT Police Clarify Explosive Incident: Abuja Blast Near BPE Premises Not Bomb-Related, Caution Urged on Metal Refuse Bins

In a swift response to the alarming incident near the Bureau of Public Enterprise (BPE) premises in the Maitama area of Abuja, the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Police Command has confirmed that the explosion was not bomb-related. The Police Public Relations Officer in the FCT, SP Josephine Adeh, issued a statement on Wednesday, shedding light on the incident and dispelling fears of a potential terrorist threat.

According to SP Adeh, a rapid response team and members of the Explosive Ordnance Disposal Unit were promptly deployed to assess the situation following the reported explosion. Preliminary findings revealed that the incident was not an act of terrorism but rather a result of an overheated metal refuse container, which, under intense heat, exploded and caused injuries to two refuse evacuators. The injured individuals are currently receiving medical attention at Maitama General Hospital.

In her statement, SP Adeh urged the public to exercise caution and reconsider the use of metal refuse bins. Advocating for safer alternatives, she recommended the use of plastic or rubber containers for waste disposal, emphasizing their reduced risk of overheating and potential hazards.

This clarification from the FCT Police aims to allay public concerns and ensure accurate information prevails amid potential speculation. As the investigation into the incident continues, it highlights the importance of proactive measures to prevent similar occurrences and underscores the need for public cooperation in adopting safer waste disposal practices.
