In a bid to address maternal mortality in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), the Federal Capital Territory Administration (FCTA) has introduced a targeted health insurance enrollment program for vulnerable pregnant women.
Dr. Adedolapo Fasawe, the Mandate Secretary of Health Services and Environment Secretariat, disclosed this initiative during a comprehensive assessment visit to the Wassa Primary Health Care Centre in Abuja Municipal Area Council (AMAC).
The purpose of the visit, as stated in a Wednesday release by the secretariat, was to evaluate the facility’s infrastructure, the quality of care provided, and operational compliance with standard healthcare guidelines.
Fasawe explained that the health insurance program aims to offer extensive healthcare support to financially disadvantaged pregnant women, with the overarching goal of reducing maternal mortality in the FCT. She said every FCT resident is entitled to quality healthcare services, irrespective of their socio-economic status.
“In recognition of the importance of proper healthcare during pregnancy and the right of every pregnant woman to essential healthcare services without financial barriers, the secretariat has taken the bold step to initiate a special enrollment process for women facing economic hardship to receive vital care,” stated Fasawe.
The insurance coverage will include various services such as prenatal care, delivery, postnatal care, and other essential medical attention to significantly decrease maternal and infant mortality rates.
Fasawe underscored the government’s commitment to enhancing the health and well-being of the people through innovative healthcare interventions and community outreach programs. Additionally, she highlighted that the FCT Minister, Nyesom Wike, has directed the secretariat to conduct advocacy and sensitisation programs to educate the public on accessing affordable healthcare services within the FCT.
