President Tinubu appoints Dr. Dayo Mobereola as NIMASA Director-General
In a strategic move aimed at strengthening maritime administration and safety in Nigeria, President Bola Tinubu has appointed Dr. Dayo Mobereola as the new Director-General of the Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency (NIMASA). The appointment, which comes with a renewable term of four years, follows the exit of Mr. Bashir Jamoh, whose tenure recently expired.
Dr. Mobereola brings a wealth of experience and expertise to his new role, holding a Ph.D. and an M.Sc in Transport Economics from the University of Wales, United Kingdom. He is also a fellow of the Chartered Institute of Transport, both in England and Nigeria, further underscoring his qualifications for the position.
Prior to his appointment as NIMASA Director-General, Dr. Mobereola served in various capacities, including as the Managing Director of the Lagos Metropolitan Area Transport Authority (LAMATA) from 2003 to 2015. His tenure as Commissioner for Transportation in Lagos State from 2015 to 2016 further solidified his credentials in the transport sector.
In addition to his public service, Dr. Mobereola has made significant contributions to the private sector, having served as Deputy Managing Director and Project Development Director at AFM Consulting Plc, London. His role as Senior Economist at British Petroleum Shipping Limited, London, further enriched his understanding of maritime operations and management.
President Tinubu expressed confidence in Dr. Mobereola’s ability to lead NIMASA effectively, emphasizing the importance of maintaining world-leading standards of maritime safety administration, maritime labor regulation, marine pollution prevention and control, search and rescue operations, cabotage enforcement, shipping development, and ship registration.
The President expects Dr. Mobereola to align his leadership with the policies and programs of the Renewed Hope Agenda for the maritime sector, as guided by the Honourable Minister of Marine and Blue Economy, H.E. Adegboyega Oyetola. This directive underscores the administration’s commitment to advancing Nigeria’s maritime industry and promoting sustainable development in the sector.
Chief Ajuri Ngelale, Special Adviser to the President on Media and Publicity, commended President Tinubu’s decision to appoint Dr. Mobereola, highlighting the importance of his vast experience and expertise in driving the agency’s mandate forward. Ngelale expressed optimism that Dr. Mobereola’s leadership would usher in a new era of progress and innovation in Nigeria’s maritime sector.
