The Director-General of the Labour Party Presidential Campaign Organisation,  Doyin Okupe has stepped down following his conviction on Monday by the court for violating the money laundering act.

Justice Ijeoma Ojukwu of the Federal High Court sitting in Abuja convicted Okupe after finding him guilty of contravening sections 16 (1)&(2) of the Money Laundering Act by accepting cash payments in excess of the N5 million  threshold allowed under the act without going through a financial institution.

The former presidential spokesperson announced his decision to resign in a letter on Tuesday. The letter was addressed to the presidential candidate of the party, Peter Obi.

Okupe said he was stepping down so as not constitute a distraction to the presidential aspirations of Mr Obi while as he faces his legal battle.
