Celebrating the indomitable spirit of Nigerian feminism, “Funmilayo Ransome-Kuti,” a riveting biopic directed by Bolanle Austen Peters, is slated for a nationwide theatrical release on May 17, 2024, following its acclaimed limited screening in 2023.

Originally unveiled for a week-long engagement from September 8 to September 14, 2023, at the prestigious Silverbird Cinema in Victoria Island, Lagos, the film garnered commendation from the esteemed Anikulapo-Kuti family, propelling it towards its eagerly anticipated 2024 release.

The biopic chronicles the remarkable journey of Funmilayo Ransome-Kuti, the formidable mother of Fela Anikulapo-Kuti, tracing her trailblazing path from being the first female student at Abeokuta Grammar School to her marriage to Israel Ransome-Kuti. Together, they vehemently opposed injustice and established the influential Abeokuta Women’s Union, igniting a fierce battle against traditional and colonial authorities who obstructed the path to justice and equality.

With stellar performances by industry luminaries such as Joke Silva, Kehinde Bankole, Adunni Ade, Iyimide Ayo-Olumoko, Ibrahim Suleiman, and Iremide Adeoye, the film transcends mere entertainment, earning accolades for its narrative depth and cinematic excellence. Notably, “Funmilayo Ransome Kuti” clinched two prestigious awards at the Africa International Film Festival (AFRIFF) for Best Overall Feature Film and Best Screenplay, underscoring its profound impact on audiences and critics alike.

While Nollywood predominantly produces comedies, dramas, and thrillers, biographical films or biopics are a rarity within the industry. However, the impending nationwide release of “Funmilayo Ransome-Kuti” signals a burgeoning trend towards spotlighting the lives of eminent Nigerians, offering audiences a compelling glimpse into the nation’s rich tapestry of historical figures and cultural icons.

“Funmilayo Ransome-Kuti” emerges as a poignant tribute to an extraordinary woman whose unwavering resolve and resilience continue to inspire generations. Through the medium of filmmaking, her legacy is immortalized, serving as a testament to the transformative power of storytelling and the enduring spirit of Nigerian feminism.
